Why it matters now
Buyers increasingly start software research by asking an assistant instead of scanning ten blue links. An assistant answers with a handful of named products and a few cited sources. If you’re not one of them, you’re not on the list, regardless of where you rank in classic search.
The search data reflects it: marketers are actively looking for ways to measure this, with queries like “ai search visibility tool” searched over a thousand times a month.
How to measure it
- Pick the questions buyers actually ask. Shortlist questions (“best X for mid-size teams”), comparisons (“alternatives to Y”) and evaluation questions (“how to choose X”). Branded questions about you inflate the score and tell you little.
- Ask each assistant with web search on. Answers grounded in live search are what buyers see, and they carry the cited sources you need.
- Parse every answer. Record each cited URL, normalize it (strip tracking parameters,
www, trailing slashes), and check whether your brand name or aliases appear in the text. - Score it. The simplest honest metric: the percentage of answers that cite or mention you, reported per engine and overall.
- Repeat on a schedule. Track the number week over week, next to what you published.
Our methodology page describes exactly how Citalia.ai does each step.
What moves the number
- Being on the pages assistants already cite. Review sites, comparison articles and community threads that show up repeatedly in your category are leverage: getting listed there carries into many answers.
- Clear, specific pages of your own. Comparison and “best for” pages that state plainly who you’re for give assistants something to quote.
- Consistent naming. If your product is called three different things across the web, assistants are less likely to connect them.
Questions
Is AI search visibility the same as SEO?
No, but they overlap. SEO measures where your pages rank in a list of links. AI search visibility measures whether an assistant's single synthesized answer names or cites you. Strong pages help both, but you can rank well on Google and still be absent from AI answers.
Why do different assistants give different answers?
Each assistant uses its own model, its own search index or search partner, and its own rules for picking sources. That's why visibility should be measured per engine rather than as one blended number only.
How often should I measure it?
Weekly is a practical cadence. Answers shift as models update and as new pages get published and indexed, so a single snapshot goes stale quickly.
What's the difference between being cited and being mentioned?
A citation is a link to a page on your domain in the answer's sources. A mention is your brand named in the answer text without a link. Both matter: mentions shape the buyer's shortlist, citations send traffic.
