How we measure AI citations

What we ask, how we ask it, how we parse the answers, and how the score is calculated.

1. The prompts

Four fixed libraries of 25 buyer-intent prompts each: software or services businesses, in English or Spanish. You pick yours when you set up your brand, and your category fills the template. The questions are shortlist, comparison, evaluation and learning questions. Prompts are the same every run, so changes in the score reflect changes in the answers, not in the questions. 2. The engines

Each prompt is sent to each assistant through its provider’s own API, with live web search turned on:

  • ChatGPT — gpt-5.4-mini with the provider's own web search tool
  • Perplexity — perplexity/sonar, which searches natively
  • Gemini — gemini-3.1-pro-preview with the provider's own web search tool
  • Grok — grok-4.3 with the provider's own web search tool

3. Parsing citations

  • We merge the sources the engine returns with any links written into the answer text.
  • URLs are normalized: https, no www., no tracking parameters (utm_* and similar), no fragments or trailing slashes. Duplicates collapse to one citation, in order of first appearance.
  • Grounding redirect links are credited to the site they point to.
  • A citation is yours if it’s on your domain or a subdomain, and a competitor’s if it’s on a competitor domain you added.

4. Detecting mentions

A mention is your brand name or one of your aliases in the answer text, matched as a whole word regardless of case. “Acme” matches “ACME” but not “Acmeville”. Text inside URLs is ignored, so a link alone isn’t double-counted as a mention.

5. Who gets recommended

A small language model reads each answer and lists the brands it recommends, in order. If that step fails, a simpler text heuristic takes over. Names are grouped by brand, so “Acme” and “Acme Inc.” count once. The ranking shows how many answers each brand appears in and its average position, and marks which ones you already track.

6. The score

Visibility score = answers that cite or mention you ÷ answers received. It’s reported overall and per engine, with cited and mentioned counts shown separately. Failed answers are excluded. Scores are only compared between scans that used the same prompt library and the same engines.

7. Website audit (Pro and Premium)

We fetch your public pages and check what assistants need to read and trust your site. Findings are ordered from most to least critical, as a checklist you can tick off:

  • Whether robots.txt lets AI crawlers in.
  • Whether the main content is present without running JavaScript.
  • Headings, page titles and structured data.
  • A sitemap, and the pages buyers look for (pricing, case studies, comparisons).
  • Advice drawn from your own scan, such as the third-party sites the assistants cite most in your category.

Questions

Are these the same answers I'd see in the ChatGPT app?

Close, not identical. We query each assistant's model through its API with web search enabled. Consumer apps can add personalization, memory and app-specific behavior that an API call doesn't have.

What happens if an engine fails to answer?

Each answer has a 120-second limit. A failed answer is marked as failed and excluded from the score, so it can't drag your number down. A scan where nothing answers doesn't count toward your monthly limit.

Do you store the answers?

Yes, the full text and parsed citations of every answer are stored with the scan so you can review them later and compare over time.

Can the website audit see private pages?

No. It only fetches public pages on the site you enter, never private or internal addresses, with strict size and time limits.
